2014 VINTAGE In the wake of the stellar 2012 and 2013 growing seasons, 2014 brought forward another idyllic year marked by well-timed spring rains and consistently warm conditions. The third year of a prolonged California drought, punctuated by a violent earthquake that shook the southern part of Napa County, 2014 presented warm and dry conditions, resulting in an early bud break. Temperate weather through the balance of the season produced a sizable winegrape crop of distinctive character, bringing an abundance of superior Cabernet fruit character and complexity to the vintage.

The 2014 harvest was completed on October 2nd, with our benchland Block 4 yielding 3.3 tons per acre. Benchland Block 3 yielded 2.61 tons, hillside Block 6 yielded 3.36 tons, and creekside Block 7 provided 2.39 tons. Similar to the 2013 vintage, the 2014 season’s idyllically warm conditions yielded fruit that delivers signature dark flavor profile and remarkable vibrancy, with a classically styled profile of graphite, smoke, game and licorice.

Shortly after harvest, 2014 marked the passage of Bob Phillips, second-generation grapegrower at Vine Hill Ranch and patriarch of the Phillips family. Survived by his wife of 52 years, Alex, and three children, this vintage honors Bob’s legacy at Vine Hill Ranch, where he is largely credited with establishing the vineyard’s reputation for producing singular Cabernet Sauvignon winegrapes.
