2016 VINTAGE The fifth year of the prolonged California drought delivered sunny, dry conditions, prompting an early budbreak with minimal frost pressure. The balance of the season presented warm growing conditions, with temperate conditions through the harvest period. At Vine Hill Ranch, these conditions resulted in a crop of exceptional quality and character. Fruit harvested from blocks 1, 3, 4, and 6 produced an extraordinary expression of the vintage, offering a complexity and depth that have become signatures of the vineyard.
The extended 2016 harvest began on September 17, with our hillside Block 1 yielding 2.95 tons per acre. Our hillside Block 6 yielded 3.05 tons per acre, and benchland blocks 3 and 4 respectively delivered 3.28 and 2.36 tons per acre. Most closely resembling the 2012 vintage, the 2016 season’s warm conditions yielded fruit that delivers remarkable textural qualities, well-developed fine-grain tannic structure, and a persistent finish. Signature dark flavor profiles combined with a remarkable vibrancy produced wines of singular complexity and structure.
